My disruptive technology report – Cloud computing services

General information of cloud computing services

In the last decade, the cloud computing service is a kind of disruptive technology that has been applied and has a great impact on all aspects of technology (Lazar, 2017). Cloud computing can understand as we use hardware or software that is understood as ours. But we will not know where it is because we use it through network services (Woodford, 2018). For this technology, we can download data sources from cd disks that are obsolete long ago. In addition, we can also upload data sources to store or share with others for different purposes (Lazar, 2017). This report presentation will attempt to have a closer look at this disruptive technology.

History of cloud computing services

In the mid-20th century, this was also the early period of internet formation, John McCarthy proposed in a workshop at MIT that cloud computing services might be sold as a utility in 1961 (Blaisdell 2011).

By the 1990s, many companies began to realize the potential of cloud computing services. In 1999, Salesforce became the most popular cloud computing service provider. Through the internet, users could access and download programs. Businesses could buy and pay for software without leaving the office (Foote 2017).

In 2006, Amazon launched Amazon Web Services that provides computing, storage and human intelligence. Besides, amazon also provided an Elastic Compute Cloud service (EC2), that allowed users to rent virtual computers and use their own services and software (Foote 2017).

In 2009, the most famous cloud computing service launched, that was Google Apps. The application marked a huge turning point for the development of cloud computing that cloud enterprise applications run on browser (Blaisdell 2011).

After this time, big technology companies also started to join. Microsoft released Windows Azure in 2009 and other big players; such as Oracle and HP have joined this large market. The importance of cloud computing is gradually confirmed more strongly (Blaisdell 2011).

The overview technical information

According to Beal (n.d), cloud computing services have the following key aspects (NIST):

  • On-demand self-service: Customers using cloud computing services can rent and pay for the use of the service themselves, without going through sales agents.
  • Broad network access: All connections to cloud computing services are via the internet.
  • Resource pooling: There are many different groups of customers; such as individuals, organizations and companies. They use and store on the same server.
  • Rapid elasticity or expansion: Customers can use the service flexibly. They can expand the service parts during use or reduce if they feel unnecessary.
  • Measured service: Customers only need to pay for a resource during the time they want to use, instead of prepaying for hardware or software.

Impact of cloud computing services

Cloud computing affects people’s lives in many ways.

Social Impact: First, everyone can become a reporter, post information directly through communication tools and can also cause social fluctuations. It is thanks to Google or YouTube, it helps people interact with people and the whole world. Secondly, Facebook is a typical example. People can find old acquaintances and search suggestions. Finally, Business use personal information and usage habits that they can understand customers and make improve services to customer requirements (Ferkoun 2013).

Education: Students can access the data to study. The school can open online classes for students to learn more easily (Ferkoun 2013). According to Corestack (2019), Simplilearn is an example, the company has opened Data Science, Big Data and Machine Learning online courses and created online virtual labs for students to practice conveniently in 2009.

Health: The hospital can manage patient data and follow their condition. Health professionals can share data from different parties (Ferkoun 2013). According to Advanced Micro-Electronics (2019), 83 percent health care providers are using cloud computing. That number is growing every year.
